The real-life story behind Zola is as strange and bizarre as the movie appears to be.

Directed by Janicza Bravo, the movie stars Taylour Paige as the titular Zola, a waitress at Hooters who meets a new friend named Stefani, played by the great Riley Keough, who immediately invites her to a weekend in Florida to make some extra cash stripping but as expected, the trip goes off the rails pretty quickly and the next thing you know there is all sorts of mayhem including lying, guns, sex trafficking and so much more.

What's stranger is it appears this entire trip was documented by Zola on Twitter in a series of tweets that was later expanded on for a Rolling Stone article.

At this point, it doesn't really matter how much of this is real or how the movie's come about but you can certainly file this under "Things you didn't know you wanted" because, as has become the norm, Keough seems to be on fire here.

Zola premiered at Sundance last year and after over a year hiatus, is finally making its debut this year.

Zola opens on June 30.
