I know it's been a few years since he's made a legitimately good movie but we haven't all given up on Terrence Malick yet right?

Or have we?

Malick's latest, A Hidden Life, is a biopic of Franz Jagerstatter, an Austrian peasant and conscientious objector of WWII who was sentenced to death and executed for his anti-Nazi sentiments. Jagerstatter was later declared a martyr and beatified by the Catholic Church.

The first look at A Hidden Life is promising. Yes, it looks very much like any other Malick movie of late, complete with intimate steady cam shots, impressive vistas, haunting score and voiceover but unlike some of his other recent work, there seems to be a clear narrative and theme here.

A Hidden Life premiered at Cannes earlier this year and will undoubtedly continue to be a festival favourite until its release on December 13.

I like the idea that Malick is doing a biographical film; I think having some boundaries will help. It seems like he has floundered a bit since The Tree of Life, which is understandable. How do you follow up a movie about *Everything*?

(And no, we certainly haven't given up on Terrence Malick)
