Marina Antunes [Celluloid 08.09.19] action thriller

Drug cartel bosses getting double-crossed somewhere along the supply chain. We all know exactly how this plays out but what makes Running with the Devil interesting is not the plotting but pretty much everything else.

To begin with, there's the cast which includes Barry Pepper as "The Boss," Nicholas Cage as "The Cook," the boss' right hand man sent in to figure out who is messing with the supply chain, Laurence Fishburne as his partner in crime "The Man," Clifton Collins Jr. as "The Farmer" - I bet you can see where this story is going just from the character names. Along with them, the movie also stars Peter Facinelli, Cole Hauser, Leslie Bibb, Adam Goldberg, and Natalia Reyes.

What's more, as predictable as the story behind Running with the Devil is, there's great gusto to Pepper and Cage's performances and there's an energy to the trailer which suggests the movie may be good fun if nothing else.

The sophomore effort from actor-turned-director Jason Cabell feels a bit lazy in the writing department, I mean you couldn't even give the characters proper names?, but no one is expecting a great work of art here.

Running with the Devil opens theatrically and will be available on VOD and digital on September 20.

For some reason I thought Nic Cage might stop making "Nic Cage movies" after Mandy. But he didn't do that after Joe, so my expectation was unrealistic.
