Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.30.19] horror thriller

Craig Zobel is best known for his intimate, hard-hitting dramas Compliance (review) and Z for Zacharia but for his latest, he's jumping with both feet into high-octane action.

Written by "The Leftovers" co-writers Nick Cuse and Damon Lindelof, The Hunt stars Hilary Swank as the organizer of the titular hunt, a once a year event where the super-rich hunt down individuals who have been kidnapped for the sole purpose of being prey.

Betty Gilpin ("Glow") and Emma Roberts play a couple of the kidnapping victims who are determined to fight back and stay alive.

The concept of people-hunting-people isn't exactly new, but the bar for the subgenre set by Battle Royale is set pretty high. I'm not convinced this will topple it but if the trailer is any indication, The Hunt could be a memorable entry into the list. If nothing else, it'll be fun watching Gilpin kicking ass.

The Hunt opens September 27.
