Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.07.19] Iceland thriller

Continuing with Mads Mikkelsen day here at Quiet Earth, one of the other movies starring the great Dane which is coming out this year is the survival thriller Arctic.

The feature film debut of Brazilian director Joe Penna, Arctic stars Mikkelsen as a man stranded in, what I assume from the from the title and the landscape, the Arctic with a woman who is badly injured.

The pair appears to be either the sole survivors or sole occupants of a downed plane who have been in the elements for some time and the woman is not doing so well. Mikkelsen decides the best course of action for survival is to travel across the snow to what appears to be either a station or settlement.

Icelandic actress Maria Thelma Smáradóttir co-stars.

It's almost impossible to watch the trailer for Arctic and not be reminded of the Liam Neeson / Joe Carnahan thriller The Grey but one marked difference with Penna's movie is that it appears to be a nearly wordless thriller what with the woman pretty much unconscious.

Arctic made its debut at Cannes last year to positive reviews and has been making the festival rounds since then.

Arctic is set to open February 1.
