We probably don't need another movie about an evil child who may or may not be the devil incarnate but Nicholas McCarthy's upcoming The Prodigy looks promising.

The new horror movie, written by Jeff Buhler of Midnight Meat Train fame as well as upcoming remakes of Jacob's Ladder, Pet Sematary and Grudge, stars Taylor Schilling (Take Me, "Orange is the New Black") as Sarah, the mother of Miles, played by Jackson Robert Scott (Georgie from 2017's It remake), a young boys who is both a genius and anti-social and perhaps even a killer.

The movie also co-stars Brittany Allen and Colm Feore.

Generally these haunted child movies are mostly misses and admittedly the fact this is produced by the team behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose doesn't really inspire much excitement but McCarthy is an interesting filmmaker and I have great respect for his feature film debut The Pact, which featured moments and images which still come to mind on occasion.

The Prodigy opens February 8.
