Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.08.17] post apocalyptic scifi action

After years of work, James Cameron's vision for a film based on "Battle Angel: Alita" is finally here and it looks... interesting.

The project, produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, based on a script from Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island and the upcoming "Altered Carbon" (trailer)) and directed by Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel stars Rosa Salazar as Alita, a cyborg rescued from the rubbish and re-built by a scientist (Christoph Waltz) only to discover she has no memories of her past though she sports some very advanced combat skills. The movie follows Alita as she tries to recover her memories while fighting her way through a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

In addition to Waltz and Salazar, the movie also stars Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's celebrated manga, Alita: Battle Angel is the latest westernized version of a popular Japanese property and though this time it appears the cries of white washing are a little more muted, likely because Salazar is latina, I'll be curious to see what other complaints, real or imagined, start to emerge now that we've seen a trailer.

I like the trailer but from the footage below, my only concern is that the augmentation made to Salazar verges on uncanny valley territory and though it's certainly appropriate for the story, I'm not sure how well this will play for the movie's running time.

Alita: Battle Angel opens July 20, 2018.

Bold move to make the main character disturbing to look at. I hope she wears sunglasses most of the time.
