John Connor [DVD News 10.24.17] post apocalyptic scifi horror action thriller adventure

Before enraging comic book nerds by entering the DCU, Zack Snyder crushed this remake of George Romero's zombie classic, Dawn of the Dead. Anyone who was around at the time will remember the controversy that raged around Snyder's use of "fast zombies", but the result was undeniably scary and well executed.

This new Collector's Edition features both the theatrical cut and a director's, unrated cut. Each version of the film includes a commentary and there are a shit ton of featurettes. The film stars Ving Rhames (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Sarah Polley (Splice), Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer (Divergent) and Ty Burrell.

Several years after the tragic death of their young daughter, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and six girls from a shut-down orghanage into their home. What seems like the answer to their prayers becomes a curse as their guests become the targets of the possessed creation: Annabelle.

Fans of the most recent Planet of the Apes movies will want this trilogy set that includes all the parts of the new series. I still haven't seen War but I hear it's emotional and intimate which is not what people were expecting.

I had heard mixed things about Olivier Assayas' esoteric supernatural film Personal Shopper, but I really loved it. I found it haunting and enigmatic with a great performance by Stewart and a couple of surprisingly scary moments.

Here the Criterion Collection gives it some love. Highly recommended.

Whatever flaws Snyder's version of DotD has, it features probably the best zombie-movie opening title sequence ever, complete with Johnny Cash soundtrack.
