Marina Antunes [Celluloid 09.13.17] horror comedy drama

Dramedies about teens going from outcasts to popular are a dime a dozen but the really good ones stay with us and so we're still talking about Heathers decades after its debut and now it looks like we'll have a take on similar material for the social media age.

Tragedy Girls stars Brianna Hildebrand and Alexandra Shipp as Sadie and McKayla, best friends who have a nearly non-existent social media footprint and hence, aren't popular. They ask one of the cool kids to help them out and when he refuses, they turn to murder and soon enough, they're serial killers by night and social media darlings by day.

The movie also stars Josh Hutcherson, Jack Quaid and Kevin Durand.

I love a good teen comedy (and sometimes even a bad one) and this one looks like it may actually hit a sweet spot between the comedy, drama and the horror. A nice bonus: the trailer didn't make me cringe with ridiculous dialogue that feels written by a 30-year-old imagining how a teen talks - though I know for a fact that that's exactly what's going on.

Tragedy Girls opens on October 20.
