That DREDD sequel fans have been pining for may be dead but the franchise is ready to move forth with a new iteration: TV.

2000 AD have announced that a Dredd TV show is in the works care of IM Global and independent UK games developer and publisher Rebellion. The "high end" TV series titled "Judge Dredd: Mega-City One" is described as being set in the universe of Dredd - a future where:

...east coast America has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis, the show will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges - futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner - as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd Century throws at them.

At the moment there have been no announcements on where the show will land but considering that executive producer Mark Stern has worked on a number of Syfy properties including "Battlestar Galactica," "Helix," and "Defiance" it is safe to assume the new project will land there as well.

Early production has started on the project and announcements on the creative team and cast should be forthcoming shortly. It will be interesting to see if Karl Urban, the last actor to play Dredd, will make a return appearance. In the past, he's shown interest in reprising his role and he's not exactly adverse to working in TV so one can hope.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in the world of Mega-City One and are wondering where to start, there are 40 years of back story to dig into!, 2000 AD superstars Keith Richardson and Michael Molcher have a few recommendations:
