Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.23.17] horror



It almost never happens with studio releases but over the weekend I was completely blindsided by a trailer for a movie I hadn't heard about.


Somewhere along the line, I missed the trailer for Get Out when it was first released and thought that's not usually a big deal when a movie looks this interesting, I just have to rectify the oversight.


Written and directed by Jordan Peele, one-half of the comedic duo Key and Peele, Get Out stars Daniel Kaluuya ("The Fades," Sicario) as Chris, a guy in an interracial couple who is meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first time. Though weird at first, the meeting seems to be going well until it becomes clear that her parents are members of some weird Stepford Wives-like brainwashing of all of the African Americans they come into contact with.




The trailer for Get Out is a little bit funny, a little bit off and a whole lot of creepy. Some of it is definitely the editing but I love the subtle comedic moments thrown into what otherwise plays like a thriller. Hopefully Peele can juggle that fine balance along with his commentary on race relations.

Along with Kaluuya, the movie also stars Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford and Caleb Landry Jones.

Get Out opens February 24.

I've always found Peele to be funny, but apparently I underestimated him. This looks quite interesting.
