I'm a really big fan of Frank Herbert's "Dune" and its many iterations. From David Lynch's bombastic adaptation which doesn't work as a stand alone movie but works relatively well as a visual companion to the first novel, to Syfy's excellent miniseries that is now nearly 20 years old. I lost track of the books sometime after the premiere of the miniseries and a couple of books into the universe which was expanded by Herbert's son Brian but considering they keep publishing them, I can only assume someone's buying them. Gotta love the built in audience...
I'm of two minds when it comes to "Dune": I'm not convinced it can ever be properly adapted into one movie and the miniseries is already great and in no need of a remake but if the right people were involved, I'd certainly love to see a new adaptation. Turns out the Herbert family feel the same way seeing as they've sold off adaptation rights of the material to Legendary Entertainment.
The announcement doesn't specify if Legendary is considering movies or TV and instead covers both with with vague blanket language.
Perhaps Legendary already has someone working on a project that is soon to be announced or that new infusion of Chinese money means they're looking for more franchise opportunities. What this means for us fans is that in the not so distant future, we're going to have a new adaptation of a scifi classic.
In the meantime, maybe someone can go ahead and make some copies of the Alejandro Jodorowsky's production book as seen in Jodorowsky's Dune (review). I have little interest in actually seeing his version of the movie but that book is rather spectacular.
Recommended Release: Dune

David Lynch's bombastic adaptation?
I like that film and millions of others do too!
It's good Movie! Forget about the book and just focus on the movie.
Now making the book into a movie? Good luck.

I'm also a fan but it doesn't make it any less bombastic.

I really like Bombastic! Guilty Sin!
Time to Break out the HR Giger Dune!
They even used the concept art in Prometheus.
Now that would be a Dune! HR Giger Style!

Whole lot of Suits.

So... "Geinius" wasn't meant to be ironic?

A "Game of Thrones"-style adaptation of Dune and its sequels could be quite interesting.
I'm fond of Lynch's Dune, but it is a pretty silly movie. So much hammy acting...
