A Denis Villeneuve movie is always a bit of an event but of late, he's really been knocking them out of the ballpark and while we hold our bated breaths for his vision for the Blade Runner sequel, he's gone ahead and dropped a sci-fi movie about an alien invasion.

Based on a short story by award winning sci-fi author Ted Chiang, Arrival stars Amy Adams as Dr. Louise Banks, a linguist who, after alien spacecraft land on earth, is recruited by the military to decipher whether the aliens come in peace.

Along with Adams, the movie also stars Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

I've not read Chiang's short story "Stories of Your Life" from which the movie is based but am certainly excited to do so, especially after this first teaser which doesn't give away anything but certainly does a fantastic job of creating a dreadful mood.

I'm also really curious to see how Villeneuve's collaboration with cinematographer Bradford Young affects the director's storytelling. It's the first time the pair have worked together. Young is best known for his work on Pawn Sacrifice, Selma and A Most Violent Year.

Arrival opens November 11, 2016.
