Manuel de Layet [Celluloid 05.19.16] thriller

While our correspondent waited hours to get into the premiere of Nicolas Winding Refn's latest film, The Neon Demon, only to be denied access to the crammed theater, those who were admitted were reportedly met with one hell of a polarizing film.

While it wasn't too long ago that Refn was awarded best director at the French fest, his last two films have caused all kinds of hysterics. This year, between screams at the screen, boos and angry walkouts, there were also glowing five-star reviews. I think it's safe to say that Refn continues to be one of the most interesting and maddening artists working in film.

Critics at the screening took to Twitter to recount tales of people's violent reaction to the LA set noir thriller, which apparently contains scenes of necrophilia.

Again, this only excites me more. We tend to love booed Cannes films like Southland Tales, Lost River and Brown Bunny. Bring it on.
