The first trailer for A Monster Calls, an adaptation of Patrick Ness' fantastical adventure novel, suggested good things to come from J.A. Bayona's latest. The director is best known for his excellent marriage of effects and dramatically poignant stories and this latest, about a little boy who escapes into another world to get away from his mother's illness and school bullies, certainly seems to be continuing in the director's tradition.

The newly released trailer includes not only a slightly better glimpse at the tree monster but we also get to see some of the other supporting cast including Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones who plays the young boy's dying mother.

The project is shaping up really nicely but I'm still having a hard time putting my finger on the mood of the story. Though the movie looks dark and foreboding, that feeling seems to be at odds with Connor's reaction to the so called "monster." I like that I'm not really sure what to expect.

A Monster Calls opens October 14.
