Christopher Webster [Celluloid 03.18.16] horror thriller

sony have released the first international trailer for The Shallows a new survival thriller starring Blake Lively and a big fucking shark (maybe more). We've gotten some really bad shark movies over the last few years, but just when I thought Sharknado had all but relegated the sub genre to the realms of internet meme, we get something awesome like this.

The Shallows is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who's last films included Liam Neeson starers Non-Stop, Run all Night and Unknown.

In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills.

Sony is explicitly marketing this as "Jaws for a New Generation", which seems only to be a way to remind people that there was once a great shark movie called Jaws. If they are working to attract a younger generation, I think the casting of Lively will do the work there.

The Shallows hits theatres 24 June, 2016

Recommended Release: Open Water (1 & 2)
