Christopher Webster [DVD News 01.06.16] scifi horror action thriller



The first week of January appears to be a big, big week for home video releases, so get out wallets (or sign up for a free month of Amazon Prime instead. Your choice.)

First up is Eli Roth's long awaited cannibal flick The Green Inferno. The title of course comes from the film-within-a-film from Ruggero Deodato's seminal splatter flick Cannibal Holocaust of which Roth is obviously paying homage.

Our own Simon Read was a huge fan of the film when he saw it well over a year ago, so, yeah, we're excited to finally catch up with it.

Denis Villeneuve continues to rack up acclaim with every new project he touches. From Prisoners to Enemy and now the excellent and tense war on drugs thriller Sicario (Mexican for "hitman"), the prospects of this guys being at the helm of Blade Runner 2 just looks better and better.





Criterion finally releases The Complete Lady Snowblood on Blu-ray, which is exciting for anyone who wasn't able to get their hands on a region B set from Arrow. Toshiya Fujita's 70's revenge tale was an inspiration for Tarantino's Kill Bill who even featured the film's theme in its soundtrack. Violent and gorgeously shot, Lady Snowblood remains a much loved Japanese series.





M. Night Shyamalan redeems himself after a number of commercial and critical disasters with the Visit, a smaller scale thriller that really works. The film was a huge success for Blumhouse who backed the project and now it sounds like the company is producing Shyamalan's next. Why the artwork has been designed to look like a generic possession flick I can't speak too.




I haven't seen Gaspar Noe's Love yet, but as a huge fan of Enter the Void I'm always intrigued to see what the director is up to. The film centers on an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with an unstable girl. Unaware of the seismic effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed.




Deathgasm (or "Heavy Metal Apocalypse" if you happen to shop at Wallmart), is a New Zealand horror comedy that really nails the vibe of early Peter Jackson or Sam Raimi. It's funny, frenetic, gory and brimming with creativity. It's definitely a standout in the 2015 horror scene and worth your time if you're a metal head or not.





Sometimes you just feel like a little campy, juvenile fun and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse certainly satisfies. In fact, crack some beers and cue it up with Cooties for a zombie double bill and you should have a great night.

Highly recommend EXPERIMENTER. Not your typical biopic.
