Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.14.15] scifi action adventure

So while J.J. Abrams has moved onto the franchise he really wanted from the beginning, he's left in his wake a franchise that started off with promise before dipping into terribleness and which is now attempting to bounce back from the abyss. Whether Star Trek Beyond will actually manage to succeed remains to be seen but this trailer is not exactly the best we could hope for.

This one kicks off with the same music as the first movie which suggests we might be getting back to some of the good stuff, I only wish I knew what in space is going on. The crew seems stranded on a planet in the far reaches of the galaxy and the Captain, along with his trusty central crew, are trying to rescue the rest of the peeps and, presumably, the ship.

Though the trailer leaves a lot to be desired, like any concept of story, this new movie does have a couple of good things going for it: in addition to the return of a great ensemble cast, Star Trek Beyond was co-written by Simon Pegg and Jusin Lin, of Fast and the Furious fame, is directing (so we know at least the action sequences will be awesome).

But really, it would take effort for this movie to be as bad as the last one. Hopefully that effort has gone into something else. Like music rights.

Star Trek Beyond opens July 22.
