Our own Jason Widgington loved the new anthology film, Tales of Halloween, coming out of Fantasia 2015, and since I got the chance to see the film early this week I thought I'd second his sentiments in my own mini-review of the film.
Tales of Halloween is the first film by the newly formed October Society, a group of upstart horror filmmakers - some up-and-coming like Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate) or Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again), and some vets like Neil Marshall (The Descent) or Lucky McKee (The Woman)- who've joined forces like Voltron to bring you a smorgasbord of amazing horror shorts.
As you know, these kinds of projects don't always go well and some anthologies end up with a few gems amid a bunch of dead weight. That is definitely NOT the case with Tales of Halloween, which offers up ten fun-sized Halloween tales, each of them unique and none of which outstay their welcome.
The film is jammed packed with homages and references to horror films and filmmakers of the past. Adrienne Barbeau reprises her role as a disc jokey from The Fog. Night of the Living Dead is always playing in the background, Adam Green shows up as a beat cop, a kid's dressed up like Snake Pliskin, Joe Dante plays a scientist, I'm pretty sure John Landis makes an appearance... there are almost too many easter eggs to get them all on first viewing.
From when the film was announced to when it was locked seemed super fast, so I wondered how good the film would look, but it is truly gorgeous, a Suspiria-like colour palette uniting each short so they all feel a part of some Halloween themed fever dream.
The biggest compliment I can throw at the film though is that all the filmmakers were smart enough to let Halloween remain fun. More than anything, Halloween is a time to have fun with fear. And even though there are still gruesome deaths and scares galore, you can tell that everyone involved in Tales of Halloween had an absolute blast.
Epic Pictures will release Tales of Halloween in theaters, on VOD and iTunes on October 16th, and if you are looking to add to your movie marathon, you can't go wrong giving this one a spin.
