John Connor [DVD News 10.26.15] horror action thriller

I believe Sam Raimi's third film in the Evil Dead series to be an honest to god masterpiece. Army of Darkness is his kitchen sink movie where everything he loves is stewed to perfection. It's also infinitely enjoyable, a film I never get sick of.

Scream Factory's Collector's Edition is certainly not the first blu-ray to be released and you can bet it won't be the last. But here they claim they've assembled every cut of the film and there are a tone of special features so it seems like a great bet if you've not already picked up various other editions. I still have my double Boomstick Edition DVD from years back, so I'm seriously considering a double dip on this one.

I've heard nothing but amazing things about Joel Edgerton's directorial debut, The Gift. It was a film I desperately wanted to see when it premiered, but missed and, while more of a psychological thriller, it's definitely making my Halloween movie marathon this year.

Besides Edgerton, the film also stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here, it bums me out that Olive Films don't offer special features on their releases. The boutique distro label have been quietly releasing rare and under appreciated gems on Blu-ray for a few years now that demand interviews and production stories. Phase IV is definitely one of those titles for us.

Saul Bass' Phase IV is up there with the best of intelligent 70s science fiction films. Yes it's about desert ants that suddenly form a collective intelligence to wage war on humans, but it's amazing. Check it out if you can, you won't be disappointing.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail gets a 40th Anniversary Blu-ray. This film was my first exposure to the Python troupe and to the absurd amazingness of British comedy in general and there was no going back.

Following having my mind blown by Grail, I devoured all things Python after this, moving onto discover Terry Gilliam's future films like Time Bandits and Brazil and even Terry Jones' Erick the Viking. Great stuff.
