Christopher Webster [Celluloid 10.22.15] horror



I assume Pascal Laugier's original Martyrs (review) needs no introduction. It's easily one of the most talked about and controversial films to see release in the last ten years. So it was no surprise that a remake was announced back in 2010 in light of the French import's success.

The remake, directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz (Scenic Route), has its premier in LA last night. In attendance were Troian Bellisario (TV’s "Pretty Little Liars"), Bailey Noble (TV’s "True Blood").

Synopsis:
10-year-old Lucie flees from the isolated warehouse where she has been held prisoner. Deeply traumatized, she is plagued by awful night terrors at the orphanage that takes her in. Her only comfort comes from Anna, a girl her own age. Nearly a decade later and still haunted by demons, Lucie finally tracks down the family that tortured her. As she and Anna move closer to the agonizing truth, they find themselves trapped in a nightmare - if they cannot escape, a martyr's fate awaits them...


Anchor Bay will be releasing MARTYRS in theaters early 2016.

I really want to be open minded, Evil Dead comes to mind as I loved that remake.
But this just screams NO to me...we'll see I guess.

The remake is utterly pointless. In effect, american cinema has ruined an amazing film. The wave of extreme french horror exists for a reason. This p.o.s. totally destroys the unique vision of the original. Apparently, the directors decided to focus on the girls friendship in leu of being true to the original. If you liked the original this is nothing other than a disgrace, and utter ruin of a film.
