John Connor [DVD News 06.16.15] scifi horror action thriller



Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover and Sarah Bolder decided to be in a horror movie. The results are the Flatliners-esque The Lazarus Effect produced by Blumhouse.


The film concerns a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life (again, Flatliners) and the complications that result. The film was not super well received upon its release. The fact that it was directed by David Gelp, a director most known for his food documentaries including Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Netlix's Chef's Table.

Neill Blomkamp's Chappie hits this week. Of course you can also get all three of his movies in the Blomkamp³ Collection. A better deal in a better package I'd say.

Blomkamp has had a tough run since District 9. I think it's safe to say that Internet Geek Nation's sci-fi wunderkind has not lived up to his reputation. But, as an artist, he he still creates singular worlds and visions of the future. Maybe it's less important to deliver perfect stories sometimes. He certainly thinks so.

Wallace Shawn's My Dinner with Andre affected my profoundly when I first saw it in its entirety a few years ago. For years I'd seen bits and pieces either on TV or in film studies classes, but it wasn't until Criterion released the film on DVD that I finally screened it in its entirety. And it's honestly amazing how a film featuring two people talking can be so engrossing. Much of this is owed to Shawn who is our surrogate. Our experience is shaped by how the titular conversation with Andre unfolds and when its over and he's release back into the New York night, the world just looks different - vast and bewildering. You have to see this one, guys.

Highly recommend WILD TALES. There are a couple of AMAZING shorts in that anthology. Plus it's funny as hell.
