Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.17.15] Germany drama crime

With Berlinale wrapped, awards handed out and general buzz starting to die down, the cream is starting to rise to the top of the pile. At the very top is Jafar Panahi's Golden Bear winning Taxi, a movie which will likely blow my mind when I see it later this year, and Sebastian Schipper's Silver Bear winning Victoria.

Schipper's movie, aside from the award, is getting a bit of buzz because it's a single shot movie. Yes, that's right, one continuous 140 minute shot. Apparently this one-shot-movie approach is still a thing and though I haven't particularly liked the predecessors, I do like the trailer for Victoria quite a bit, even if it plays like your conventional trailer. The movie stars Laia Costa as the titular woman who, while out on the town in Berlin, meets a group of guys with whom she spends the next few hours and with whom she gets into a tiny bit of trouble.

I love the energy of the trailer and I must admit that I'm curious to see if the gimmick of the single shot actually brings anything extra to the movie. We'll even have a chance to find out since Victoria has been picked up for distribution.
