A few weeks back Neil Blomkamp released some concept art for an Alien movie he'd hoped to make. At the time, there was some speculation that he'd been on board the project and that it had never materialized but in a recent interview, the director has clarified some of the mystery surrounding this Alien movie that never was.

Turns out Blomkamp was working on an unsolicited Alien project in his spare time. He had a story concept, and had generated some art but he and Fox never had a serious discussion about him making the movie. Thanks to the internet, that still change.


Blomkamp has been working with Sigourney Weaver on the upcoming Chappie (trailer) and in the past, she's been very candid about wanting to return to the Alien franchise. Now the two have met and had conversations about the franchise which makes you wonder: could this actually happen?

Never say never.

The studios are always looking to make a buck. Alien is a proven money maker and a franchise that people are still excited about. If it fails, they can pass along partial blame to the fans who wanted the project and if it succeeds, the studio will take credit for listening to the fans. The spin doctors will fix it however it goes. What I'm not sure about is how this pipe dream would fit into the current batch of prequels.

If this actually has traction, the Alien franchise could turn into the next Star Wars.

I think it's time to take Alien in another direction while still remaining true to the back story. I think there is a still some life in the franchise. Sigourney is a great actress, but as Nixon's backers and staff said during Watergate "it's time Dick."
