Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.27.15] scifi thriller

Yesterday was a good day for the internet. The headlines were full of loose llama news, debates over the color of a dress and then just when you thought it couldn't get any more interesting, it was announced that a director had been hired for the Blade Runner sequel.

Canadian auteur Denis Villeneuve, the mastermind behind Polytechnique, Incendies (review), Prisoners and most recently the mind bending Enemy (review), will step behind the camera to direct the Blade Runner sequel that will take place several decades after the original and see Harrison Ford reprise his role of Deckard.

My first thought at hearing the news was elated joy. Villeneuve is a brilliant director with a unique vision and great taste. If he's signed on, perhaps the script is better than anyone anticipated. With him behind the camera, I have no doubt the movie will at least be interesting to watch. On the other hand, I can't help but wonder if Villeneuve is getting himself into a dark hole of directing mediocre Hollywood fare. He's so much better than that.

Villeneuve’s next movie, a thriller titled Sicario, opens September 18.
