Why can't studios ever just leave well enough alone?

Remember The Strangers? Bryan Bertino's kick ass home invasion flick? The one with the weird masks? It was pretty great: atmospheric, well acted, all around creepy as hell.

The studio has been talking about making a sequel since the original came out but over the years, interest on the project has waned and at some point, Bertino dropped out of writing the project and the entire thing just seemed dead. Sad, considering the original director was involved, but probably for the best.

Not satisfied that they've mined this concept to the core, there are reports now that Relativity is moving ahead with the sequel, this one directed by Marcel Langenegger and from a script that will be written by 30 Days of Night sequel screenwriter Ben Katai.

The new movie follows a family who go on one final family trip before sending their troublesome teenage daughter off to boarding school. According to The Wrap "their last bonding opportunity turns to horror when the teenage children discover the bodies of their aunt and uncle, fresh from a recent visit from the Strangers — Man in the Mask, Pin Up Girl and Dollface."

Stay tuned. More to come. Whether we like it or not.
