Christopher Webster [Celluloid 01.05.15] action thriller adventure

When we interviewed Rare Exports director, Jalmari Helander, he told us his next film would be "an action movie with a love story and a warm heart, something like Home Alone meets Rambo." Now, I don't know about a love story, or the Home Alone part, but the Rambo part seems to have carried through Big Game's development process.

Designed as a throwback to the PG-13 Ambling adventure films of the 80s, Big Game features an adolescent at the heart of a global incident. Fans of Helander's evil Santa movie, Rare Exports (a film I liked and respected, but was ultimately soft on), will notice the same sense of amazing scope that seems to exceed what is likely a smaller budget level.

BIG GAME tells the story of Oskari (Onni Tommila), a shy, nervous 13-year old boy. Like his forefathers, his time has come to take a test of manhood by spending one day and one night alone in the wilderness of a vast local forest. Armed only with a bow and arrow, his task is to return with a prize to prove himself.
But this is no ordinary night; Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and Oskari discovers the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson) in an escape pod. Now the fate of the most powerful man in the world lies in his hands. With the terrorists closing in, Oskari and the President must team up to survive the most extraordinary 24 hours of their lives.

No idea when Big Game comes out, but as fans of the filmmakers we're excited to check it out.
