Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.10.14] scifi drama

Mike Cahill and Brit Marling exploded on the film scene three years ago with the release of the excellent Another Earth. Since that release, I've been keeping a close eye on Marling's moves(she's been quite busy in the years since) and on Cahill who has been a little slower in developing his next project. Not that I'm complaining. I'd rather he take his time and re-emerge with another interesting story and it appears he has done exactly that with I Origins.

The new sci-fi drama stars Marling and Michael Pitt (nice to see him back after what seems like a very long break) as scientists studying the evolution of the human eye and making a startling discovery that could potentially change society as we know it and raising both spiritual and scientific questions. It sounds like heady stuff but if Another Earth taught us anything it is that Cahill is a great talent and as the first trailer for I Origins suggests, it looks like we're in for another winner.

I Origins will open July 18.

Loved Another Earth where the premise was impossible but lurked in the background of a personal story. Here the premise is stupid but governs the entire plot... sort of like every anti-science mock-spiritual movie Hollywood has ever made. I hope to be proved wrong, but the trailer seems to reveal far too much.

That's actually one of the complaints from people that have seen the movie: the trailer gives away too much.
