Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.07.14] United Kingdom comedy drama

It's odd how things come together. A while back there was news that Michael Fassbender was in a new black comedy where he plays the titular Frank, a musician who wears a head he never takes off. It seemed weird but it's a movie; strangeness is somewhat expected. So imagine my surprise while watching Filth (which, by the way, is very good) to come across the same head featured in Lenny Abrahamson's Frank. What the hell!?

Turns out Frank Sidebottom is really a thing, or more accurately, the persona of musician and comedian Christopher Mark Sievey. What, if anything, that has to do with Abrahamson's movie about a dude that wears a replica of Frank's head and leads a band on the brink of success is not clear but then, I don't need it to be. It's Michael Fassbender. Need I say more?

Well, if you need more, Frank also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy and is scheduled for UK release May 2.

It's a bit weird that Frank in the film speaks with an American accent, given that Sievey was from the North of England (and the Frank character was from Timperley). I know the film is based on Jon Ronson's book about playing in Sievey's band, but they seem to have gone down a much more fantasy-realist route. Perhaps the true story wouldn't be exciting enough?
