Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.19.14] Japan scifi action

While we eagerly anticipate the release of Gareth Edward's upcoming Godzilla remake (trailer), the original Japanese monster will also be making a return appearance on the big screen.

Rialto Pictures has produced a newly restored, 60th anniversary edition of Ishirô Honda's Gojira. The monster movie classic was originally released in the US in 1956, if you could actually call it a release of the same movie considering it was badly cut, included a new plot with Raymond Burr at the center of the action and only featured an hour from Honda's original. Over the years, the full version of Gojira has occasionally reared its head in North American cinematheques but nothing quite this extensive.

To celebrate the anniversary, Rialto will premiere the like-new feature at the TCM Classic Film Festival in April and then follow it up with a number of screenings across the US.
