Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.04.13] action thriller adventure history

Having a 300 sequel that looks like an almost exact replica of the original doesn't really do much to excite me, especially when the idea of a nearly completely green screened movie isn't ground breaking but the first trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire caught attention. Not because of the way it looks which was the big attraction for the first movie but for the simple fact that it suggested the women were going to take a front and center role in the action.

I had hoped that the female centric frist trailer wasn't a one-of and considering how large of a role they play in this new trailer, I'm starting to think there's something more to this than just fan service.

Zack Snyder is acting as executive producer this time around with Noam Murro stepping behind the camera for directing duties. This time around the story is based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel "Xerxes" which has Greek General Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) (with the help of Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey)) gathering the troops to fight off Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro reprises his role) and Artemisia (Eva Green) who commands the Persian navy.

It certainly looks pretty and I must admit, I'm really excited to see a movie which seems to feature two very strong women in leading roles. Bring on the CGI blood!

300: Rise of an Empire opens March 7, 2014.

I still think it would be better if they had Barker's Pinhead character play the role of Xerxes.
