Marina Antunes [Celluloid 05.28.13] thriller drama

I'm not sure what to make of the trailer for the Goetz brothers Scenic Route. The SWSX selected thriller came out of the festival with mixed reviews and I can certainly see why; the trailer feels like this is a comedy in disguise but everything I can find says this is far from the truth.

The script from Kyle Killen (worth noting he also penned odd Jodie Foster directed/Mel Gibson starring The Beaver) pits Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler as best friends whose relationship has waned over the years. The pair are on a cross country road trip when their car breaks down in the middle of the desert. At first Fogler's character admits that he sabotaged the car deliberately to get more opportunity to catch up with his buddy but when it turns out the car really is broken, tensions rise and things get ugly.

All of that information, including the fake breakdown, is handed to the audience in the movie's just emerged trailer. This leaves me to wonder what on earth the movie has left to offer. I'm all up for surprising great performances but I'm not certain the pair can carry the movie for any extended period of time.

No official release date yet but word is that Scenic Route is shooting for an August release.
