Marina Antunes [Celluloid 05.15.13] scifi action

Now I'm really confused. It was already pretty clear that Riddick would follow more along the lines of Pitch Black than The Chronicles of Riddick but I didn't realize it was a sort of remake of the original. Hey, I'm as big a fan of this franchise as anyone else (I actually really liked Chronicles even though it didn't always make sense) but I was hoping for some sort of natural continuation to the story and not a rehash of the first movie.

The newly released trailer has Vin Diesel as our titular anti-hero, stranded on a sun scorched planet. He activates a rescue beacon that summons two different ships: a group of mercenaries and a second ship manned by someone from his past. No Karl Urban in sight but there's a bit of quick editing in the middle of this trailer that suggests the past may be one of his Necromonger buddies but it's too muddled to tell for sure.

I'm excited to see Riddick but I must admit, it's looking like the kind of thing that would usually land in the direct to DVD market however, fans will get a chance to take in all the action not only in theatres but in IMAX no less. And that's kind of awesome.

Riddick opens September 6.

Katee Sackhoff!

I'm down with this. Unlike Pitch Black which was mostly horror, this looks like a combo of high tech scifi action and horror.

I enjoyed the 1st movie and the 2nd one greatly expanded the universe. I'm somewhat disappointed they are retreading old ground here, but I will withhold final judgement until I see it for myself
