Marina Antunes [Celluloid 05.10.13] scifi thriller

Though Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron has been dabbling in documentary shorts for the last few years, he's yet to follow-up his spectacular Children of Men but that's all going to change this October when the helmer returns with the space thriller Gravity.

Co-written with his son Jonas, Gravity stars the blockbuster duo of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts who attempt to make a return to earth after a disaster destroys their vessel and leaves them floating around in space. Terrifying? You betcha.

It's a fascinating concept and Cuaron is an exceptional filmmaker but pulling this off will be no easy task. With only two characters and a story that looks to be concentrated solely on them with no cutaways, it's going to be a hard sell for the mainstream thankfully, that's not us. Sure, it worked for Castaway but that was only part of the movie while this seems to go all the way.

Gravity opens October 4.

For the first 15 minutes. And then what? Unless there are some real plot twists no one knows about, this film is either a modern-day Apollo 13 and everyone comes home, or some or none come home---and in either case there can be no surprises.
