Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.19.13] thriller

Francesca Gregorini's Emanuel & the Truth About Fishes made a bit of a splash when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year to many a positive review. A psychological thriller, the film stars Kaya Scodelario as Emanuel, a troubled girl who becomes obsessed with her new neighbour (Jessica Biel), a woman who happens to resemble Emanuel's dead mother.

The trailer for Gregorini's movie is not only beautiful but there's a slightly off kilter feel to it as if something is about to go very wrong with each new scene. It's somewhat reminiscent, in tone at least, of Stoker (review) though any comparison between the two films is likely coincidental considering they were in production at the same time.

Considering the strong reception and the great trailer, it's surprising that this hasn't been picked up for distribution yet. Hopefully that will change soon.
