Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.04.13] horror fantasy



Director Karen Lam is no newbie. The Vancouver based director has been producing and directing for over a decade with a couple of shorts and a feature under her belt, not to mention she's this year's recipient of the Artistic Innovation Award from Women in Film. It's going to be an extra busy year for the director who has two shorts ready for release into the world along with a great looking feature length film titled Evangeline.

Adapted from Lam's award winning short Doll Parts, Evangeline stars Kat de Lieva as the titular character, a young woman who has run away from her strict religious upbringing to forge a new life for herself. Sadly she doesn't get far into her new life because she gets killed at her first college party. That's no spoiler but rather the opening of Lam's dark drama which follows Evangeline as she is "resurrected and infected by an old and terrifying presence, transforming her into an avenging angel."


With influences as far ranging as Korean revenge movies and Shakespeare, Evangeline promises to deliver a macabre bit of entertainment and looking at the teaser, there are some good things afoot. The teaser plays more like a creepy music video, more than I hoped we would get this quickly considering the project just wrapped filming last week, complete with a great track from Didges Christ Superdrum.
