Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.13.13] France horror thriller crime

I don't know, I just don't know.

Last year's trailer for Maniac looked darn good but I too am having a hard time buying Elijah Wood as a serial killer. I hope for the best and what we've seen so far certainly suggests good things but I'm having a really hard time looking at Wood as a bad guy.

A remake of William Lustig's 1980's horror classic, Maniac stars Wood as the owner of a mannequin store (this alone has potential for great creepy moments) who becomes obsessed with a young artist. This new take was adapted in part by Alexandre Aja and is being directed by Franck Khalfoun who directed the holiday thriller P2 from a few years ago, a movie I enjoyed quite a bit.

Maniac premiered at Cannes last year and has been making the festival rounds, picking up a number of accolades. It's due for release in the UK in March but while IFC Midnight picked up US rights for the movie, there's been no word on when we could expect to see it.

In time for its UK release, a new trailer has emerged for the POV thriller. It features much of the same footage as before but newly cut to some pounding music which works to great effect. I'm still on the fence but I'm definitely curious.
