One thing is clear watching the trailer for Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills: the director seriously needs to consider direct a straight up horror movie.

I had some problems with the movie when I saw it last year at VIFF, particularly with the second act which nearly stalls the movie, but it does have quite a few redeeming qualities including fantastic cinematography, apparent in the trailer, but above all, it features such a spectacularly great third act that I'll happily bear the sluggish second act for the final payout and watching this masterfully cut trailer only makes me more anxious to revisit it.

Beyond the Hills is the story of two women who come together after years apart. One has devoted her life to the church while the other has come to rescue her one-time lover but instead finds herself drawn into the church.

Beyond the Hills opens in limited release on March 8th.
