Marina Antunes [Film Festival 09.12.12] Mexico horror

The web has been abuzz the last few days with speculation about who "Makinov" is. The director, who claims to hail from Belarus, is said to have worn a mask through production of Come Out and Play, and apparently takes his name from a jacket he always wears. One thing we know for sure is that the guy is eccentric (just look at this "Makinov Manifesto" which turned up a few days ago). It may just be a case of good marketing, heck anyone talking about you and your movie is better than no one paying attention, but either way, there is a bit of mystery around the filmmaker.

One thing we know for sure is that Makinov is behind the remake of the classic horror movie Who Can Kill a Child. Adapted from Juan Jose Plans's novel, it's the story of an English couple who arrive on an island where the children have gone crazy and are murdering adults. I've yet to see Narciso Serrador's classic, an error that will be fixed sooner rather than later, so it's impossible for me to tell whether this looks better or worse than the original but it definitely looks interesting.

Makinov's movie stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Vinessa Shaw as the tourist couple and the first trailer looks promising. There's something unsettling about horror taking place in the daylight and with children to boot but one thing's for certain, there's a feeling of dread as the couple rounds the corner to the beach in an effort to make an escape only to find a line of children blocking their way.

Come Out and Play will play TIFF before heading to Fantastic Fest later this month.

So in the remake 2 white americans go to a foreign country and get assaulted by colored kids... Great just great... Wonder if they end up killing them pretty graphically on screen...

Ha, ill-fated "ugly Americans" all over the world... on the run, getting haunted down by hostel devils, cults, evil people & rascals, oops... it's getting lame, predictable & also a bit ridiculous. Even so truth really is that our "ignorant Americans" together with the "stoic Germans" & the "bitchy Japanese" actually occupying the top-spots of the list of most disliked foreigners worldwide according to EXPATS.Org and TOURIST.Int.! But back to the trailer in comparison with the original it does look quite phony... So, is it a another failed & dumped down remake or just a poor trailer??

Just saw it, and it IS basically a scene-by-scene remake, except instead of UK protagonists, it's Americans, and instead of a Greek island it's a Mexican island. It's fairly lame and pointless as it's a carbon copy of the original. Don't get it?
