quietearth [Celluloid 07.04.12] Japan anime horror history

Asura is based on a banned manga from the early 1970's which revolves around a child cannibal in famine-wracked feudal Japan whose taste for human flesh has turned him into a demon. The adaptation is directed by Keiichi Sato for Toei and is filled with plenty of blood, bodies, and carnage. Asura is currently playing at NYAFF.

Set in war torn mid-15th century Japan, a boy named Asura was born a beast. A young girl named Wakasa helps to tame Asura and help foster his human side. Asura grows up to become a high preist and help guide lost souls to heaven.
