Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.26.12] Australia scifi western

David Michod has been busy writing scripts for others in the few years since the release of the excellent Animal Kingdom (review) but the Australian writer/director is finally stepping behind the camera for a follow-up and it is none other than a "futuristic western." I imagine I'm not the only one that smiled widely at that description.

The film has been in development for some time but THR reports that Screen Australia will provide production financing for the project which has Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce attached.

The movie is set in the Australian desert and "tells the story of Eric, who has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him, as he's forced to join an injured gang member, Rey, to hunt down Rey's gang after they steal the last of Eric's possessions."

Not sure what this will look like (Mad Max-ish perhaps or more like Priest?) but I'm more than willing to find out. One thing's for certain, with Michod behind the story and camera, it's bound to be a violent affair.
