quietearth [Celluloid 06.01.12] Russia scifi drama romance adventure

I don't know if it's going to be exciting as it sounds, but this $8 mill movie (which already had one make in 1963) is being adapted from Alexander Belyayev's novel by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan). The story is based around a man basically stuck to his ocean environment due to a transplant of a set of shark gills. Story boards, further info, and 1962 trailer below.

While no director has been attached, apparently financing is in place and it will be a co-production between 3 different countries. Filming is slated for late 2012.

The book tells the story of a young man named Ichtyander (literally ‘Fish Man’ in Greek) who as a child received a life-saving transplant a set of shark gills. The operation was performed by his father, Doctor Salvator, a scientist and maverick surgeon. The experiment was a success, but it limited the young man’s ability to interact with the world outside his ocean environment. Similar to other works by Belyaev, the book investigates the possibilities of physical survival under extreme conditions, as well as the moral integrity of scientific experiments.
