quietearth [DVD News 02.16.12] apocalyptic horror

Take Shelter - From the director of Shotgun Stories, Jeff Nichols, Take Shelter was a favourite of many around these parts. A haunting apocalyptic vision and a searing family drama all in one.

The Dead - In a world full of zombie movies it's tough to know which ones to watch and which ones to leave behind. The Dead comes with a ton of praise heaped upon it, both because of the African setting and the fact that it feels like a successor to the best of Romero.

The Devil's Rock - Two Kiwi commandos find the head of Hitler's occult Gestapo squadron who has been experimenting with incantations from an ancient tome to allow a succubus to cross over from Hell. It's all part of a master plan to win the war on the eve of D-Day. Bam!

Nude Nuns with Big Guns - Never heard of this one, but the title is certainly intriguing, if a little misleading...

Human Centipede II: Full Sequence - This one appeared on Netflix instant and I still haven't watched. Not sure I ever will. The first film was a pleasant surprise - a mixture of weird humor and horror rarely seen. This one just looks disturbing and perhaps pointless.

Paranormal Activity 3 - This one's all about the backstory of the sisters.
