Can anyone do Kerouac's masterpiece justice? Having initiated the careers of many writers and poets, Jim Morrison among them, will it be able to bring the fervor the book imbues? It's supposedly a big contender for Cannes, but I fail to see how it can be properly adapted.

Directed by Walter Salles, the film stars Sam Riley as Sal (Kerouac himself), Garrett Hedlund as Dean, Kristen Stewart as Marylou (who did that casting?!), Kirsten Dunst as Camille, Viggo Mortensen as Bull, Amy Adams as Jane, and Tom Sturridge as Carlo.

What do you think?

After the death of his father, Sal Paradise, an aspiring New York writer, meets Dean Moriarty, a wild and infectiously charismatic ex-con. They hit it off immediately. Determined to avoid the pitfalls of a narrow, prescribed life, Sal hits the road, joining Dean on what evolves into a life-changing physical and emotional odyssey. Thirsting for freedom, they discover the world, the ecstasy of experience, the connectedness of humanity and ultimately themselves.

my fear for this project is that the material is already beyond the understanding of todays "target audience"...this is a story that DOES NOT translate well for anyone who has no recollection of the "beat" movement and such...although I would be thrilled if they ACTUALLY COULD pull it off...certainly supportive of the effort in any event...
