Marina Antunes [Celluloid 10.03.11] horror fantasy

For the past few months I've been keeping an eye on a local production that showed much promise. A short film directed by award-winning make-up and effects artists Shervin Shoghian and Freddy Chavez Olmos, Shhh is the story of Guillermo, a young boy bullied at home by his older sister and terrorised by a monster in the bathroom, who uses his imagination to overcome his fears.

What initially appealed to me about the project was the director's vision which called for the use of practical effects rather than going the CG route and the concept art that they were working with looked promising. Featuring a creepy monster conceived by Sion Lee and put together by prosthetic and creature designer Tibor Farkas, the monster suit is worn by a dancer, giving the creature a beautifully fluid movement I hadn't expected but which is hinted at in a few frames of the trailer.

With the project complete and the duo is prepping for festival submission, it's likely we'll have the opportunity to see the film in the coming festival year but until then, the dark and moody first trailer is not to be missed.
