Ralph Bakshi's Fire and Ice is a high water mark of the 80s sword and sorcery cycle of films that started after the success of Conan the Barbarian. It was a joint venture that brought together Bakshi and one of the true legends of American fantasy illustration, Frank Frazetta.

Well now, direct Robert Rodriguez - an outspoken fan of Frazetta's work - has taken up the gauntlet, announcing his intention to turn the animated 80s epic into a live action fantasy extravoganza that (he hopes) will be like stepping into one of Frazetta's paintings.

From his stronghold in Ice Peak, the evil Nekron sends forth a wave of deadly glaciers, forcing humanity to retreat to Fire Keep, a kingdom ruled by a generous king. When King Jarol’s daughter Teegra is kidnapped, young warrior Larn teams with the mysterious and legendary Dark Wolf, to rescue the princess and the realm from Nekron’s evil sorcery.

Don't believe it's really happening? Check out some recently released concept art for the project below. Sure looks like Frazetta to me.

The original Fire and Ice is out on Blu-ray

I'm actually a big fan of Bakshi's original. Interesting concept and just enough edginess to keep me interested throughout. Ol'Ralph promised us WIZARDS 2 decades ago but has yet to deliver....(sigh)

Not a fan of Bakshi at all, but with Rodriguez helming this new effort, I'm cautiously optimistic. The real failing point to Bakshi's original was a very weak script. Frazetta was a phenomenal artist (met him and his wife once, about six years ago at his museum in PA) but sadly he was not a very good word-smith. Robert E. Howard was a superb writer, but I've yet to see a single competent big-screen telling of any of his characters. Guess art doesn't always translate both ways!
