Marina Antunes [Celluloid 06.01.11] Canada movie trailer news western

What better way to celebrate Canada Day than with the release of a movie about life in the Canadian outback before the turn of the century and The Mountie looks like a low-key western (it's a far cry from Paul Gross’ Gunless) capable of doing just that.

Co-written and directed by Wyeth Clarkson, he made a bit of a splash with 2006's Sk8 Life, the film stars Andrew W. Walker as Wade Grayling, a lone Mountie who has rolled into a town in the Yukon Territory to clean up the crime and corruption brewing behind closed doors (or in this case, inside tents). The movie also stars the talented Jessica Paré who some may recognize from her recent role on TV’s "Mad Men."

I'm not a huge fan of the title (I prefer the film's original title of Way of the West) but the trailer looks promising. It's adequately gritty and suggest some good drama but it goes all melodramatic with the music in the second half of the trailer. Hopefully that's not a problem with the movie itself.

There's an assortment of great looking stills, music and even a version of the script, available on the film's official website. The Mountie rides into theatres in Toronto and Calgary on July 1st and expands to more cities on July 8th.

Trailer after the break.

A great concept set in a perfect period for thematic exploration; there's some promise evident, but man, loaded with those overly Canadian faces and that maudlin score--well, I'm nervous. Could be Solima or could be Colizzi.

The "Way of the West" trailer for Lionsgate looks SO MUCH BETTER!

It's the same movie. But it's direct to DVD? Huh?

It's the same movie but it's only called the Way of the West by Lionsgate in the US apparently. The real title in the rest of the world is "The Mountie"
