Marina Antunes [Film Festival 03.21.11] movie trailer news scifi video

One of the films generating seriously positive buzz coming out of Sundace was Mike Cahill’s small budget sci-fi Another Earth. Aside from the critical acclaim, it won both the “Special Jury Prize: Dramatic” and the “Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.” The film was also well received by viewers – something which doesn’t always cross pollinate when it comes to indie festival (two words that mostly scream "instant death at the box office") films.

Cahill’s story focuses on Rhoda, an MIT astrophysics student, who while leaning out her car window to see the newly discovered second earth, slams into a minivan and kills the family in it. After some time in prison, she attempts to gain closure by visiting John, the surviving father and the two fall into an unlikely relationship. From the looks of the newly emerged clips, it seems as though the second earth plays a fairly large role in the developing relationship as Rhoda is very interested in travelling to the mysterious planet while John seems reluctant and even scared of what could be out there.

I had yet to see the trailer for the film which has been kicking around for a few weeks, but with the appearance of the new clips, I decided to check them all out and I’m impressed. I love these small stories which have sci-fi aspects and this one certainly seems to fit the bill.

The film hasn’t played anywhere since Sundance but it has been picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight in what Deadline called “one of the bigger commitments to a small film in recent memory, maybe since The Blair Witch Project." I expect we’ll likely see the film get some sort of distribution in the fall.

Trailer and clips after the break.

It's huge... The astronomers in this universe must be pretty fail for it to be a "newly discovered" second earth.

Not much looking into the laws of physics and the universe before making this film I can see. If somehow anothr huge earth or earth sized object just somehow appeared that close in space about 10,000 horribe things would happen within no time at all. From there gravity to there magnetic fields, etc

I can't wait buy the way to see how they try to explain to the audience how this other earth just appeared one day out of the blue ? I think it would be actually better off if they did not thought becasur any explanation they give will be laughable.

"an MIT astrophysics student"
Not again, brat attack...

", who while leaning out her car window to see the newly discovered second earth,"
O brother...

"slams into a minivan and kills the family in it. After some time in prison, she attempts to gain closure by visiting John, the surviving father and the two fall into an unlikely relationship".
Do the words: weird and wrong come to mind...
What a crap.
If the father took vengance on the other hand - justifiably, and everything remained unexplained, maybe.

Maybe the Earth appeared from a parallel universe

Isn't it kind of obvious that this wouldn't be even remotely possible in any way? Just try to get into the mindset that it's a surreal fantasy drama instead of a sci-fi.

Personally I think it sounds really interesting.

There's more science in an RKO serial than this flick :| Neat metaphor, just confusing if approached as any other than a human interest piece.
