On Friday, July 23, Comic-Con attendees will get a chance to see a sneak peek of the new AMC series “The Walking Dead.” The series premiers this October as part of AMC’s annual “Fearfest” lineup, but Comic-Con fans will be able to view a preview of the show and discuss it with a panel that includes director Frank Darabont and several actors from the show. This series is hotly anticipated by zombie fans everywhere, especially since Darabont promises that the television show will be just as gory and disgusting as any self-respecting zombie film.

“The Walking Dead” series is based on the graphic novel(s) of the same name, written by Robert Kirkman. It’s a classic zombie premise: a man wakes from a coma only to realize that the world as he knew it is gone… because it’s been ripped apart by flesh eating zombies. He meets up with a group of rag-tag survivors and makes his way to Atlanta in search of his wife and son, battling hoards of the undead along the way. Admittedly, the plot doesn’t seem to be much different from the many zombie stories and films out there, but critics say that what sets “The Walking Dead” apart from the rest is rich character development and character-driven storylines.

Author Robert Kirkman, who is also Executive Producer of the television series, has given Darabont’s interpretation his stamp of approval. On an AMC blog for the show, Kirkman stated, “Everyone is really trying to do good by the comic, and there are scenes that are straight out of it… But at the same time, [Frank Darabont] is vastly improving the material.” Special effects designer Greg Nicotero will also be lending his talents to the show, which is promising considering he has worked on such films as Romero’s Day of the Dead and Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds.
