Christopher Webster [Celluloid 05.26.10] movie news horror thriller south korea

Woohoo! Kim Ji-woon, the man behind last year's stellar Korean western The Good The Bad The Weird and K-horror classic A Tale of Two Sisters is back with I Saw the Devil, a man who plots revenge against a psychopath killer (Oldboy's Choi Min-sik) after his girlfriend gets murdered.

If you're someone who's just not that into Asian horror (and why not?) and even flicks like Old Boy don't do it for you, do check out The Good the Bad and the Weird (my review) to see why we're excited about this one. Ji-woon's quite a talent in my books.

Just as an interesting aside, ISTD was formerly called "Night in the Subtropics."

Asia in general and Korea in particular is the only real bright spot in horror now days. Much of the stuff coming out of the east is fresh, original, and really creepy. Most of the Hollywood remakes of Asian movies have been half-baked at best, (the cat being grabbed in the opening scene of the remake of One Dropped Call was really funny). I’ve pretty much resigned myself to Friday the 13th 44, and bad remakes of every semi successful horror franchise of the 80’s and 70’s. Thank god for the net and we can hope the North Koreans can behave and not turn the south and the north into an ash heap. (That would suck on so many levels)
